Behavior Expectations

All students are expected to be responsible and respectful.  They are required to follow directions and stay on task.  In addition, they are to show respect for others and keep their hands, feet, objects, and rude remarks to themselves.  They are to take care of school property, other people’s property, and their own property.
Students will be held accountable for their actions and there will be  consequences associated with their choices. Good behavior will be recognized and rewarded, and inappropriate behavior will be treated in accordance with the BCSD discipline code.

What Will We Study?

Third grade is a very important time for your child.  Mastery of the California Content Standards is our goal.  Students will focus on fluently reading and comprehending grade level texts, both fiction and non-fiction.  Grammar and writing skills will be stressed in order for students to communicate effectively.  In mathematics, we will be building on last year’s skills and introducing many new ones.  Students should have memorized their addition and subtraction facts in second grade, as we will be emphasizing multiplication and division.  Most students will need extra practice at home in both reading and math.  This will be an exciting and challenging year for all our students.  Let’s work together to help them succeed.

Homework

Homework helps students develop responsibility and good study habits.  It also provides children with an opportunity to practice new skills presented in class.  Your child will have homework Monday through Thursday of each week.  Students are expected to return completed homework assignments on time.  In addition to the practice pages, students are required to read for a minimum of twenty to thirty minutes each day.  This will help them develop reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Please take the time to review and discuss your child’s homework assignments on a daily basis.

Attendance

One of the most important things you can do to help your child have a successful year in third grade is to make sure they come to school on time every day.  Students who are absent or tardy will have difficulty keeping up with the rest of the class.  Frequent absences prevent a child from doing as well in school as they should and may result in lower grades due to missed assignments.  In order for your child to make the most academic growth possible, we expect each and every student to be present every days unless they are ill.  If your child must be absent, please call the school attendance line at 631-4916.
